How To Store A Real Fur During The Off-Season!

Storing and taking care of a real fur is essential to preserve its quality, texture, and longevity. Natural materials like fur can be easily damaged by environmental factors and neglect. Here’s a detailed guide on how to store a real fur during the off-season (summer):

1. Store in a Cool, Dry Place

  • Avoid heat and humidity. Fur should be kept in a cool, dry place —ideally between 45°F to 55°F (7°C to 13°C). Excessive heat or moisture can cause the leather to dry out and crack.

2. Keep It Away from Light

  • Avoid sunlight and artificial light. Light can cause fur to fade and dry out. Store it in a dark closet or use a dark, breathable cover.

  3. Breathable Cover

  • Prefer to use bags and covers, only when you need to transfer the fur. In that case, use a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic, as fur needs air circulation to stay supple.

4. Give It Space

  • Hang on a broad, padded hanger to support the shoulders and avoid stretching. Don’t squish with other garments—fur needs air circulation.

5. Protection from Pests

  • Fur is highly attractive to moths and other insects. Keep cedar blocks or lavender sachets nearby, but not directly on the fur, to repel moths and insects. Regularly inspect for any signs of pests.

6. Have It Professionally Cared For

  • Annual professional fur storage (especially in hot climates) is recommended. Have it cleaned by a furrier once a year to maintain the natural oils and prevent matting.

The proper storage and care of the real fur is is extremely important to maintain its quality, appearance, and longevity. Be aware that the fur that is kept under the proper conditions can remain in excellent shape for more than 20 years!
